The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has emerged as the largest party in the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, according to unofficial results released from the majority of constituencies.
Based on results from 18 constituencies, the PPP has won nine seats, placing it ahead of all other political groups. Independent candidates secured five seats, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) won three seats. Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) managed to secure one seat.
PPP candidates recorded victories in several constituencies, including GBA-1, GBA-4, GBA-5, GBA-7, GBA-9, GBA-10, GBA-11, GBA-12, and GBA-19. Independent candidates won seats in GBA-3, GBA-6, GBA-21, GBA-23, and GBA-24. Meanwhile, PML-N candidates were successful in GBA-18, GBA-20, and GBA-22, while MWM secured victory in GBA-8.
In GBA-1 Gilgit-I, PPP candidate Amjad Hussain won the contest with 10,594 votes, defeating his PML-N rival Muhammad Shafiquddin. In GBA-3 Gilgit-III, independent candidate Syed Sohail Abbas emerged victorious with 7,877 votes.
PPP also performed strongly in Nagar, where Muhammad Ali Akhtar won GBA-4 Nagar-I and Zulfiqar Ali Murad secured victory in GBA-5 Nagar-II. In Hunza, independent candidate Nek Nam Karim won the constituency.
The party also celebrated a key win in Skardu-I, where Syed Tauqeer Mehdi defeated former governor Raja Jalal Hussain Khan. Additional PPP victories were reported from several constituencies across the Baltistan region.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly consists of 33 seats, including 24 general seats, six reserved seats for women, and three reserved seats for technocrats. A party or alliance requires at least 17 seats to form the government.
Election officials reported that over 958,000 voters were registered for the polls. A total of 396 candidates participated in the election, including 266 independents. Voting took place at 1,368 polling stations across the region.
Security remained tight throughout the electoral process. More than 15,000 police personnel were deployed, while additional security measures were implemented at sensitive polling locations to ensure peaceful voting and result compilation
