Karachi University Road to Reopen by End of July

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that Karachi’s University Road will be reopened to traffic by the end of July as construction on the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project moves forward. The announcement came during his visit to the project site, where he reviewed progress and ongoing development activities.

Speaking to the media, Memon said construction teams are working around the clock to ensure timely completion of the major transport project. He acknowledged the inconvenience faced by commuters due to prolonged construction work and traffic disruptions but assured citizens that efforts are being made to speed up progress.

The minister said the Sindh government has continued upgrading roads and infrastructure across the province using its own resources. He added that development projects are moving ahead despite challenges posed by poor road conditions on routes that fall under the administrative responsibility of the federal government within Sindh.

Memon also revealed plans for a new terminal being developed on the Northern Bypass. According to him, the facility is expected to play an important role in easing traffic congestion and improving transportation flow in Karachi, which remains Pakistan’s largest commercial hub.

Highlighting the city’s national importance, the senior minister said Karachi bears a significant share of Pakistan’s employment, business and healthcare responsibilities. He noted that people from across the country travel to Karachi in search of jobs, education and medical treatment, making the city’s infrastructure demands far greater than many other urban centers.

Commenting on broader transport connectivity, Memon criticized the motorway network’s alignment and said Karachi should have been directly linked to the motorway system from within the city. He also addressed the city’s water challenges, stating that Karachi experiences around a 20 percent water shortage because it is located at the tail end of the country’s water distribution network.
