A final decision regarding revised business hours for Punjab markets is expected later today as authorities continue consultations on opening and closing timings for shops, bazaars, and commercial centers across the province.
According to a spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in Lahore, discussions are underway and an official announcement is likely to be made by the evening. The outcome is being closely watched by traders, shopkeepers, and consumers who are awaiting clarity on whether the current relaxation in timings will continue or if earlier restrictions will be reinstated.
The Punjab government had previously extended relief for traders by allowing Punjab markets to operate beyond the earlier deadline until June 2. The relaxation was granted following repeated requests from business associations, which argued that shorter operating hours were affecting commercial activity.
Earlier, under a nationwide energy conservation strategy introduced in response to rising global fuel prices, markets were directed to close by 8 PM. The policy was implemented as part of efforts to reduce electricity consumption and lower the country’s energy burden during a period of economic pressure.
After concerns raised by the business community, authorities temporarily eased the restrictions and allowed additional operating hours until June 1. The extension provided some relief to traders, especially in major commercial hubs where evening shopping contributes significantly to daily sales.
The policy was not limited to Punjab alone. Similar market timing regulations were enforced in several regions, including the federal capital. However, the Islamabad administration has now decided to end the relaxation period. From June 2, all markets, shopping malls, retail outlets, and commercial centers in Islamabad will once again be required to close at 8 PM.
The original energy-saving measures were announced in April when Pakistan faced increasing fuel costs due to instability in the Middle East. The conflict disrupted global oil supplies and pushed petroleum prices upward, prompting authorities to introduce conservation measures across the country.
With a new decision expected shortly, traders and consumers are keenly awaiting confirmation on the future operating hours of Punjab markets and how they may impact business activity in the coming weeks.
