The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has reported that temperatures in many parts of the country are above normal. The PMD warned that mild heatwave conditions may develop in the coming days.
According to the National Weather Forecasting Centre, southern regions are already experiencing higher temperatures. The PMD said these areas are 2°C to 4°C warmer than usual.
The department expects a mild heatwave in southern Pakistan from April 29 to May 3. This may affect regions like south Punjab, upper Sindh, and parts of Balochistan.
Officials noted that May and June are usually the hottest months in Pakistan. These months often bring extreme heat, especially in southern areas.
During strong heatwaves, temperatures in these regions can reach up to 52°C. Normally, temperatures stay between 43°C and 45°C during peak summer.
The PMD also shared updates about weather conditions in northern areas. A westerly weather system is expected to affect upper regions in two phases.
The first phase will begin on the night of April 27 and continue until April 29. The second phase is expected from May 3 to May 5.
Due to this system, temperatures in upper areas may drop by 2°C to 4°C. This may provide temporary relief from rising heat.
The PMD said it is closely monitoring the situation. Further updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
Globally, neutral ENSO and IOD conditions are currently present. However, there is a 61 percent chance of El Niño developing between May and July.
If El Niño forms, it could increase temperatures further in the region. This may lead to more intense heatwaves in the coming months.
Authorities have advised people to take precautions during hot weather. Staying hydrated and avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours is important.
