Rawalpindi Underpasses To Undergo Expansions

The Punjab Communication and Works Department has completed 64 percent of the Rs. 14 billion remodeling project at Kutchery Chowk and is preparing to begin construction on three underpasses along Peshawar Road at an estimated cost of Rs. 8 billion.

Punjab Highway Department Executive Engineer Qamar Ali Saqib said the flyover and underpass structures at Kutchery Chowk are already finished, with earth filling and related groundwork currently underway. Authorities have instructed IESCO, PTCL, and SNGPL to shift their utilities into a dedicated corridor to prevent future disruptions.

The project, executed by the Frontier Works Organisation, also includes a new pedestrian corridor and an upgraded drainage system at Kutchery Chowk. Officials have emphasized completing the work by the April 30 deadline.

Preparatory work for the Peshawar Road underpasses is already underway. IESCO has begun relocating 10 electricity pylons from Qasim Market to Chairing Cross, a step expected to finish by the end of February. Once complete, construction of the underpasses will commence around mid-March.

The authorities aim to minimize traffic disruptions, as more than 200,000 vehicles currently use alternative routes near the area. Civic agencies have also been directed to relocate trees instead of cutting them wherever possible to preserve greenery during construction.

The department has assured commuters that the project will improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and overall infrastructure in one of Lahore’s busiest intersections.
