Microsoft has released its August 2026 security update for Windows 11. The update includes new features, design changes, and several quality improvements.
The mandatory KB5121003 update was released on August 11. It applies to Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2.
The update moves version 25H2 to OS build 26200.9168. Version 24H2 is updated to build 26100.9168.
Some features may not appear immediately on every computer. Microsoft is using its Controlled Feature Rollout system for several changes.
Copilot+ PCs Get New AI Control
One notable change affects compatible Copilot+ PCs. Users can now remove the Image Generation AI component from Windows 11.
The option is available where the component has been installed. However, there is still no single setting to remove all Windows AI features.
Windows Hello is also receiving an important security improvement. Compatible external fingerprint readers can now support Enhanced Sign-in Security.
The technology processes biometric information inside a protected environment. Previously, this feature was mainly limited to built-in fingerprint hardware.
File Explorer and Search Improvements
File Explorer is receiving several usability improvements. File sizes will now appear using more suitable units.
Files can be displayed in KB, MB, and GB instead of showing all sizes in kilobytes. This should make file information easier to understand.
Users can also middle-click folders from the address bar or Home page. This action opens the folder in a new tab.
Microsoft has also fixed several File Explorer issues. These include gray flashes, unexpected scrolling, and problems with Recommended thumbnails.
Windows Search has also been improved. It can now better recognize misspelled and incomplete application names.
Search results in Settings should also become more relevant. More useful results will appear higher in the list.
Touchpad and Voice Access Changes
Precision touchpad users are getting additional controls. These include settings for scroll and zoom speed.
The update also adds accelerated scrolling. Scrolling becomes faster when users repeat the same gesture.
Voice Access is gaining a Voice Isolation option. It can reduce background noise and voices from other people.
Users can select Voice Isolation, background-noise removal, or unfiltered microphone input. Microsoft has also changed the default behavior of Fluid Dictation.
Fluid Dictation is now turned off for new Voice Typing users. Guidance has also been added to explain the feature.
More Windows 11 Improvements
The Start menu Account Control interface has received a redesigned appearance. It can also display subscription and account-related information.
Lock screen Widgets have been simplified for new users. Weather is now the only default widget.
Taskbar notification badges will also use the Windows accent color instead of red. Power settings have received several improvements as well.
Changes to display, sleep, hibernate, and lid settings can now apply across power plans. The Energy Saver battery threshold option has also returned.
Windows Update now provides more accurate installation progress estimates. It also uses improved cleanup processes after updates.
The release includes additional fixes and refinements. These cover system sounds, time-zone detection, printing, networking, clipboard reliability, and overall stability.
