The EU has removed its previous timeline for launching the European Travel Information and Authorization System. The system was earlier expected to begin operating in late 2026.
Travelers now have no confirmed launch date for the new travel requirement. The EU is expected to announce a new date several months before ETIAS becomes operational.
According to the official ETIAS website, the system is currently not operating. Applications are also not being accepted at this time.
The latest development means visa-exempt travelers do not currently need ETIAS. They can continue traveling to participating European countries under existing entry rules.
The EU had previously indicated that ETIAS would launch during the final quarter of 2026. That expected timeframe has now been removed.
ETIAS has faced several delays since its original launch plan. The system was initially expected to become operational in 2021.
ETIAS Will Cover Visa-Exempt Travelers
Once introduced, ETIAS will apply to visa-exempt nationals visiting 30 European countries. It will cover travelers making short stays in participating countries.
Eligible travelers will need to apply online before starting their journey. The authorization will then be electronically linked to their passport.
ETIAS authorization will generally remain valid for three years. It will expire earlier if the traveler’s passport expires.
The new requirement will not change the existing short-stay conditions. Travelers will still be allowed to stay for up to 90 days.
The 90-day limit will apply within any 180-day period. Other existing entry conditions will also continue to apply.
ETIAS is intended to provide an additional screening process before eligible travelers arrive in Europe. However, the system is not yet available.
Warning Over Unofficial ETIAS Websites
Travelers have been warned about unofficial websites claiming to process ETIAS applications. The official application system has not opened.
Travelers should therefore avoid paying websites that claim to offer ETIAS applications. The official system will provide application services once it becomes operational.
The EU will announce the final launch date ahead of the implementation. Travelers are expected to receive several months’ notice.
Until then, eligible visitors can continue traveling without ETIAS. They must meet the entry requirements currently applicable to their nationality.
Travelers should also monitor official European travel information before making future plans. Requirements may differ based on nationality and destination.
The removal of the previous timeline does not mean ETIAS has been canceled. It means the launch date remains unconfirmed.
The system could still become an important requirement for visa-exempt travelers. However, no application is required until the EU officially activates ETIAS.
