Basant Turns Deadly in Lahore—What Happened During Kite Flying

Basant celebrations in Lahore turned tragic this year as several kite-related accidents were reported across the city. One person died, and at least five others were injured in separate incidents.

Rescue officials said 25-year-old Ali Rashid lost his life near Sukh Nehar in Baghbanpura. He reportedly climbed an electricity pole to retrieve a cut kite and came into contact with live wires. His body was shifted after completing legal formalities.

In another incident, a young man named Rafi was injured in Defense Phase 5. A sharp kite string reportedly cut his neck, and he was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.

Authorities also reported injuries in Gulshan Ravi, where multiple string-related accidents occurred. An eight-year-old child, Arsa, and a 45-year-old man, Shabbir, were hurt in separate incidents and hospitalized.

Meanwhile, 12-year-old Abdul Wahid was injured in the Lower Mall area after falling while running to collect a kite. A 14-year-old teenager, Salman, also required hospitalization after falling from a tree in Gulshan Ravi while trying to retrieve a kite.

Rescue officials said such accidents usually spike every year during Basant. They warned that chasing cut kites, climbing poles, and using sharp strings significantly increase the risk of serious or fatal injuries.

Officials urged citizens to celebrate Basant responsibly. They emphasized that avoiding risky behavior, especially for children and teenagers, can prevent further casualties. Authorities also called on parents to supervise their children during the festival and ensure their safety.

Despite its cultural significance, Basant can be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. Rescue teams and medical staff remain on high alert during the festival to respond quickly to emergencies.
