Several major motorways across Punjab were temporarily closed on Wednesday after dense fog drastically reduced visibility, prompting authorities to suspend traffic movement for public safety.
According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, the decision was taken as visibility dropped below safe driving limits, making travel extremely dangerous during early morning hours.
Officials said thick fog affected multiple motorway sections, including M-2 from Thokar Niaz Baig to Chakri, M-3 from Faizpur to Samundri, and M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad.
The fog also forced the closure of M-11 from Lahore to Sial Mor near Sambrial and M-14 from Daud Khel to Isa Khel, causing disruption for commuters.
Motorway Police officials explained that fog can sometimes reduce visibility to less than 50 meters, significantly increasing accident risks for fast-moving vehicles on highways.
Fog is a recurring winter phenomenon in Punjab, especially in January, when cold air traps moisture and pollutants near the ground due to temperature inversion.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that such weather conditions contribute to hundreds of road accidents every year, including over 200 fog-related crashes annually.
Authorities have advised motorists to avoid unnecessary travel, strictly follow traffic advisories, and remain updated through official announcements before starting journeys.
Drivers have also been urged to use fog lights where permitted, maintain safe distances, reduce speed, and avoid sudden braking during foggy conditions.
The Motorway Police said patrolling teams remain active on affected routes to assist stranded motorists and manage traffic once conditions improve.
Officials assured that all closed motorway sections will be reopened gradually as soon as visibility improves and driving conditions become safe.
Meanwhile, commuters have been advised to delay travel plans during early morning and late-night hours when fog intensity is usually highest.
Weather experts have also predicted that foggy conditions may persist in the coming days due to continued cold weather across the province.
The Motorway Police reiterated their commitment to prioritizing public safety and urged citizens to cooperate with authorities during weather-related disruptions.
