SSGC May Suspend Gas to Industries to Prioritize Households

Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) may suspend gas supply to industrial consumers on Saturday to ensure sufficient gas supply for domestic users, officials said on Wednesday.

The proposed step comes after several areas of Karachi experienced gas shortages in recent days, affecting households. Officials noted that the situation has improved slightly after restoring 25 to 30 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) of natural gas from operational wells.

SSGC officials explained that domestic gas demand increases sharply during winter. People use gas extensively for heating, which puts extra pressure on the gas supply network. To manage the seasonal surge, authorities are considering prioritizing domestic users over industrial consumers temporarily.

The company said this move will help ensure continuous gas supply for homes and reduce inconvenience during peak winter months. Industrial users are advised to plan operations accordingly and stay updated with official notifications.

Earlier this month, the federal government announced it would not increase gas tariffs for the next six months, offering relief to household consumers. Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) increased the price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by Rs10.68 per kilogram. The new rate is Rs219.67 per kilogram, affecting households and small businesses using gas cylinders.

Officials emphasized that SSGC is closely monitoring the gas supply situation and will adjust distribution as needed to balance the needs of domestic and industrial users. Consumers are also urged to use gas efficiently to avoid wastage.
