The top 10 destinations for remote workers have been revealed

As remote work becomes more prevalent, many professionals are taking the opportunity to travel while continuing their careers. These individuals, known as “digital nomads,” work remotely while exploring different parts of the world. In response to this growing trend, Global Citizen Solutions has released a ranking of the best countries for digital nomads. The list evaluates 65 countries based on factors such as visa costs, benefits, quality of life, economy, and technology.

Spain leads the list as the top European destination for digital nomads, largely due to its Digital Nomad Visa program introduced in early 2023. To be eligible for this visa, applicants must:

  • Be non-European citizens.
  • Be freelancers or employed by companies outside of Spain.
  • Have a clean criminal record for the past five years.
  • Possess health insurance that covers Spain.
  • Provide proof of qualifications, such as a university degree or relevant work experience.
  • Have an established professional relationship with a foreign company for at least three months (for freelancers).
  • Demonstrate sufficient funds to support their stay, with a minimum monthly income of $2,750, increasing to $3,750 if bringing family members.

Following Spain, the Netherlands ranks second, with Norway, Estonia, and Romania completing the top five. Other notable countries in the top ten include Malta, Portugal, Canada, Hungary, and France. Taiwan and Malaysia are the only Asian countries in the top 15, ranking 12th and 15th, respectively.

The report notes that digital nomad visa programs are particularly advantageous for citizens of countries with weaker passports, as they provide a pathway to permanent residency in more desirable locations.

Global Citizen Solutions’ list underscores the increasing popularity of digital nomadism and offers useful guidance for freelancers and remote workers looking to blend work and travel.
