The FIFA World Cup 2026 has entered its Round of 16 after an action-packed knockout stage reduced the competition to just 16 teams. The next phase begins on Saturday, July 4, with every remaining nation aiming to secure a place in the quarterfinals.
The tournament started with 48 teams from around the world. After the group stage and the Round of 32, only 16 sides remain in the race for football’s biggest prize. From this point onward, every match is an elimination contest. The losing team will leave the tournament, while the winner will continue its World Cup journey.
Several well-known football nations were eliminated before reaching this stage. Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan were among the biggest teams to exit the competition. Some of these matches were decided by penalty shootouts, adding more drama to the knockout rounds.
Despite those exits, many traditional football powers remain in the tournament. Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Portugal, and Spain have all qualified for the Round of 16. Co-hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States have also reached the next stage, keeping local supporters excited.
The qualification process rewarded the top two teams from each of the 12 groups. They were joined by the eight best third-placed teams to complete the Round of 32. The winners of those matches have now advanced to the Round of 16.
Canada booked its place after defeating South Africa 1-0. Brazil earned a 2-1 victory over Japan to continue its campaign. Paraguay eliminated Germany after winning a penalty shootout, while Morocco also advanced by beating the Netherlands on penalties.
Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 to qualify. France comfortably beat Sweden 3-0, while Mexico secured a 2-0 win against Ecuador. England also progressed after a narrow 2-1 victory over DR Congo.
Belgium defeated Senegal 3-2 to move forward. The United States beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0. Spain advanced with a 3-0 win over Austria, while Portugal defeated Croatia 2-1.
Switzerland earned a 2-0 victory against Algeria. Egypt advanced after defeating Australia in a penalty shootout. Argentina beat Cape Verde 3-2, and Colombia secured a 1-0 win over Ghana.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 opens with Canada facing Morocco at Houston Stadium on Saturday. Paraguay will then meet France in Philadelphia later the same day.
Sunday’s schedule includes Brazil against Norway at New York/New Jersey Stadium. Mexico will also face England at Mexico City Stadium in another key fixture.
One of the biggest matches of the round will take place on Monday. Portugal will face Spain at Dallas Stadium in a highly anticipated contest. Later that day, the United States will play Belgium in Seattle.
The Round of 16 will conclude on Tuesday. Argentina will take on Egypt at Atlanta Stadium, while Switzerland will face Colombia at BC Place in Vancouver.
