Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon recently revealed an extensive plan to combat drug abuse, with a particular focus on implementing random drug tests for students in schools and colleges.Set to commence on May 10, this initiative is a vital part of the province’s broader efforts against the global problem of drug addiction, especially among young people.

Memon emphasized the seriousness of the situation, citing President Asif Zardari’s directive to address drug abuse directly. He praised the collaborative efforts of various government bodies, including Home Minister Ziaul Hassan, in ongoing anti-drug initiatives.

Additionally, the minister highlighted recent successes in apprehending suspects and seizing large quantities of narcotics. He emphasized the need to handle students who test positive for drugs with utmost confidentiality and pledged tough action against drug suppliers.

In a separate announcement, Memon disclosed that from May 10 onwards, the Excise & Taxation Department would begin operations against unregistered vehicles, potentially resulting in their confiscation. He urged vehicle owners to ensure timely registration to avoid penalties for unpaid taxes.

However, Memon acknowledged challenges within the narcotics control department, particularly citing delays in recruitment due to legal obstacles. This situation has caused frustration among job seekers and hindered the department’s effectiveness.
