Punjab to Make Rawalpindi First District Free of Single-Use Plastic (2)

The government of Punjab has announced a major environmental initiative to eliminate single-use plastic. Rawalpindi will become the first district headquarters to go plastic-free under this plan.

Implementation of the project will begin from June. Officials say this marks an important step toward reducing plastic pollution across Punjab.

The announcement was made by the Punjab Environment Protection Agency, also known as Punjab-EPA. The agency confirmed that enforcement work is already underway.

According to Director General Dr Imran Hamid Sheikh, laws banning single-use plastic bags are already active in Punjab. Authorities are taking strict action against violators.

He said fines, sealing of shops, and legal measures are being used where needed. The goal is to ensure full compliance with environmental laws.

The new initiative is part of a wider plan to make Punjab plastic-free in phases. District headquarters across the province will be included gradually.

Rawalpindi has been selected as the starting point for this transition. Officials said the city will lead the way for other districts in Punjab.

Dr Sheikh explained that a phased approach has been adopted. This is to avoid disruption for businesses and the local market system.

He also said eco-friendly plastic alternatives are available. Bags with a thickness above 75 microns are being encouraged for use.

Authorities are working with traders and industry stakeholders in Punjab to promote safer alternatives. This includes awareness and cooperation programs.

Plastic-free zones are also being set up in Rawalpindi. These zones aim to reduce the use of harmful plastic materials in key areas.

The initiative will also extend to traditional markets in Punjab. Officials believe this will help improve overall compliance.

Environmental experts have warned that single-use plastic causes long-term damage. They say urgent action is needed to protect land and water resources.

The Punjab government says this plan is part of a broader environmental protection strategy. It focuses on sustainability and public health improvement.

Officials have urged citizens and businesses to support the initiative. They believe collective action is essential for a cleaner and greener Punjab.
