The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has decided to phase out fuel-powered buses and replace them with electric buses as part of a major initiative to promote environmentally friendly public transportation across the province.
Under the new plan, the authority aims to transition its entire bus network to an electric transport system designed to reduce carbon emissions and provide cleaner, more modern travel facilities for commuters. Officials say the move is part of broader efforts to modernize urban transport infrastructure in Punjab.
To implement the project, PMTA has invited applications from interested companies and firms. The pre-qualification process for suppliers and operators is scheduled to begin on July 16, marking the first formal step toward the electric bus rollout.
According to the eligibility criteria, participating companies must have prior experience in supplying 12-meter fully electric buses. They are also required to demonstrate capability in providing genuine spare parts along with repair and maintenance services for electric vehicles.
The selected firms will not only supply buses but will also be responsible for installing and commissioning charging stations. In addition, they will oversee driver training programs and manage operational arrangements to ensure smooth deployment of the electric fleet.
Officials said the initiative is being carried out to develop a carbon-free and sustainable public transport system in line with the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, with expectations that it will significantly improve urban mobility and environmental conditions.
