Punjab Assembly Seeks Social Media Ban for Children Under 16

A resolution has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly seeking restrictions on social media access for children under the age of 16. The proposal also calls for the introduction of an effective age verification system to help protect young users from online risks.

The resolution was submitted by Punjab Assembly member and Chairperson of the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau Punjab, Sarah Ahmed. It highlights growing concerns over children’s exposure to harmful online content and the increasing need for stronger digital safety measures.

According to the resolution, children face several online threats, including cyberbullying, digital exploitation and exposure to inappropriate content. It argues that stronger safeguards are needed to create a safer online environment for minors using social media platforms.

The proposal recommends introducing suitable legislation to regulate the creation and use of social media accounts by underage users. It also calls for stricter oversight to ensure that age restrictions are effectively implemented across digital platforms.

The resolution urges the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to establish a comprehensive monitoring and regulatory framework. The proposed system would include an effective age verification mechanism to prevent children under 16 from accessing social media without proper safeguards.

Sarah Ahmed said every child has the right to a safe and secure digital environment. She stressed that timely legal action is necessary to protect young users from online dangers and ensure their well-being in the digital age.

The resolution also points to international examples, noting that countries such as Australia, France and China, along with several US states, have introduced measures aimed at improving online safety for children. These initiatives include age restrictions, parental controls and stricter platform regulations.

If adopted, the resolution could pave the way for future legislation on children’s online safety in Pakistan. Any nationwide policy or regulatory changes would require action by the federal government and the relevant authorities.
