The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has approved a plan to introduce AI education for students up to grade five in schools across the province. The initiative aims to prepare children for a technology-driven future by introducing them to basic artificial intelligence concepts at an early age.
According to officials, the new program will include a dedicated AI curriculum and the establishment of AI laboratories in primary schools. The proposal is part of the province’s efforts to modernize education and improve digital learning opportunities for young students.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board. Officials confirmed that the curriculum has been prepared and will be presented for final approval during the board’s next meeting before publication.
The government also plans to recruit qualified educationists on a contract basis to support the program. Officials said many government schools currently do not have teachers with the specialized knowledge required to teach AI effectively.
The project will be introduced in two phases. During the first phase, AI will become a separate subject for students in primary classes. The curriculum will focus on basic concepts that are suitable for young learners.
The second phase will focus on practical learning. Modern science and AI laboratories will be established in selected schools. These labs will allow students to explore technology through hands-on activities and classroom experiments.
Officials said the province has also prepared an alternative plan if budget limitations delay the installation of AI laboratories. Under this option, basic AI lessons will be added to existing science textbooks.
This backup strategy will ensure that students begin learning fundamental concepts even if new laboratory facilities are introduced later. The government believes this approach will help maintain progress despite financial challenges.
The final approval for publishing the curriculum is expected during the next meeting of the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board. Once approved, schools will begin preparing for implementation across the province.
The complete rollout of the new education program is planned for the 2027 academic year. Schools will gradually adopt the curriculum as teaching resources and infrastructure become available.
Education officials believe early exposure to artificial intelligence will improve digital literacy among students. It is also expected to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics from the primary level.
