KP Launches Free Public Wi-Fi Project in Peshawar

The KP government has officially launched the “KP Open Wi-Fi” project to provide free internet access at key public locations across Peshawar. Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi inaugurated the initiative, describing it as an important step toward improving digital connectivity and expanding access to online services.

The project is part of the provincial government’s broader digital transformation strategy. Officials said the first phase will focus on providing free Wi-Fi at major government hospitals and public transport facilities in Peshawar. The service is expected to benefit patients, commuters, students, and visitors who require internet access during their daily activities.

According to the government, KP will also extend the free Wi-Fi service to all public universities and colleges across the province. This expansion aims to improve access to educational resources and support students with reliable internet connectivity for learning and research.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Chief Minister Afridi said the initiative would gradually expand beyond the provincial capital. During the second phase, the project will be introduced in Abbottabad, Mardan, Swat, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. The government plans to cover all divisional headquarters in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The chief minister highlighted the province’s progress in digital governance. He said KP has already achieved between 70 and 80 percent progress toward digitizing government services. The administration is working to gradually introduce paperless public services across different departments.

Afridi said improving internet access will create more opportunities for education, employment, and entrepreneurship. He noted that digital connectivity has become an important tool for young people seeking careers in freelancing, technology, and online business.

He also welcomed the continued growth of Pakistan’s e-commerce sector. According to the chief minister, online businesses are opening new opportunities for entrepreneurs and contributing to economic development across the country.

During his speech, Afridi expressed concern over internet slowdowns and service disruptions. He said unreliable internet affects students, businesses, freelancers, and many other people who depend on stable online access for work and education.

The chief minister also pointed out that several merged districts still lack proper telecommunications infrastructure. Some areas continue to face challenges because they do not have reliable internet services or mobile phone coverage.

The government said expanding digital infrastructure remains one of its priorities. Officials believe wider internet access will improve public services, encourage innovation, and strengthen the province’s digital economy.

The launch of the KP Open Wi-Fi project reflects the government’s commitment to improving digital inclusion across the province. By expanding free internet services, the administration hopes to make technology more accessible for citizens while supporting education, healthcare, and economic growth.
