PMD Issues Heatwave Alert for Karachi as Temperatures Rise

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Karachi, warning residents to prepare for significantly higher temperatures in the coming days. The weather department expects the city to experience increasingly hot conditions as a strong high-pressure system develops over the region.

According to the PMD, temperatures in Karachi are expected to range between 28°C and 38°C from Saturday through Monday. However, weather conditions are forecast to intensify from June 8 onward, with daytime temperatures expected to climb between 40°C and 43°C and remain at those levels until June 12.

The Met Office stated that a high-pressure system is likely to form in the upper atmosphere on June 8 and persist through June 11. This weather pattern is expected to contribute to heatwave conditions not only in Karachi but also across several other parts of the country, leading to unusually high daytime and nighttime temperatures.

The department has forecast hot to very hot and dry weather across most districts of Sindh during the period. Officials noted that nighttime temperatures are also expected to remain above normal levels, reducing relief from the heat and increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Authorities have advised citizens, especially children, women, senior citizens, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, to take precautionary measures. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., wear light clothing, and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and heat exhaustion.

The PMD has also advised farmers to plan agricultural activities carefully and ensure adequate protection for livestock during the hot spell. Officials warned that electricity demand is likely to rise significantly due to increased use of cooling appliances and urged the public to use water and energy resources responsibly throughout the heatwave period.
