Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday announced what he described as a major diplomatic breakthrough between the United States and Iran. In a statement shared on social media, he revealed that the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” had been electronically signed by the leaders of both countries and endorsed by Pakistan in its role as mediator. The development was presented as a significant step toward easing tensions and promoting stability in the region through dialogue and peaceful engagement.
According to the prime minister, the agreement demonstrates the commitment of both Washington and Tehran to resolving long-standing differences through diplomacy rather than confrontation. He stated that the memorandum had been signed at the highest governmental level, reflecting a shared desire to avoid further escalation. Sharif said the understanding would take effect immediately and could pave the way for broader regional cooperation in the future.
As part of the initial measures outlined under the agreement, Iran will reopen the Strait of Hormuz while the United States will lift its naval blockade. These steps are expected to improve regional stability and support global trade routes that pass through one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. The prime minister described the agreement as a practical move toward reducing tensions and preventing a wider conflict.
Sharif also praised US President Donald Trump for his role in securing the agreement. He said Trump’s commitment to diplomacy and preference for peaceful solutions helped prevent a conflict that could have had serious consequences for the Middle East and beyond. The premier further acknowledged the contributions of key members of the American negotiating team, including J. D. Vance, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The prime minister also expressed appreciation for Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. He praised their willingness to pursue peace and highlighted the efforts of Iranian negotiators who participated in discussions leading to the memorandum. Sharif said their patience and commitment to constructive engagement played an important role in achieving the breakthrough.
In addition, the premier thanked regional partners for supporting the diplomatic process. He specifically acknowledged the contributions of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt. Sharif also paid special tribute to Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, saying his efforts were instrumental in facilitating the diplomatic breakthrough. Concluding his statement, the prime minister expressed hope that the Islamabad MoU would lay the foundation for lasting peace, mutual respect and prosperity across the region.
