Veteran Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has shared his thoughts on how the Hindi film industry has changed over the years, saying Bollywood is now far more competitive than it was when he first entered the profession more than four decades ago.
Speaking during an interview on AIG Hospitals’ YouTube channel, the 67-year-old actor reflected on the industry’s evolution, describing the early years of his career as a time when actors and filmmakers supported one another like family.
According to Dutt, the atmosphere in Bollywood has shifted significantly over the years, with competition now playing a much bigger role than collaboration.
“When I started, the industry felt like a family. Everyone was together, everyone was helping one another. Now it’s become much more cut-throat, much more competitive. Hollywood is different from here,” he said.
Dutt began his acting career in 1981 with Rocky, a film that established him as one of Bollywood’s promising young stars. Over the years, he delivered several iconic performances in films such as Khal Nayak, Vaastav, and the highly successful Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. franchise.
Beyond discussing the changing nature of the entertainment industry, the veteran actor also opened up about the life lessons he learned during one of the most difficult periods of his life—his time in prison.
Dutt revealed that the greatest lesson he learned was the importance of forgiveness. He recalled that a prison constable taught him a philosophy that continues to influence his life today.
“I learned to forgive. A constable taught me that so well. He told me, ‘Learn to forgive people, and you’ll grow more in life.’ You may know that someone has hurt you, but you forgive them,” Dutt said.
The actor explained that adopting this mindset transformed his outlook on life, helping him let go of resentment and become a stronger person. He added that forgiveness is not a sign of weakness but a way to move forward and focus on personal growth.
Dutt has frequently spoken about overcoming hardships, including legal battles, health challenges, and personal struggles. His latest comments once again highlighted how those experiences have shaped his perspective both personally and professionally.
The actor was most recently seen in the action thriller Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. His performance in the film received positive reviews from audiences and critics, further proving his enduring popularity in the Indian film industry.
