Parvez Elahi Arrested By Anti-Corruption Shortly After Adiala release

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has re-arrested Parvez Elahi, the President of PTI, shortly after his release from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. This arrest is related to allegations of him receiving bribes in connection with development project contracts.

Parvez Elahi, who is also a former Chief Minister of Punjab, had initially been arrested on June 1 in connection with a corruption case. However, he was released the following day only to be arrested again in another case. In mid-July, he was released from Lahore’s Camp Jail, where he was detained in a money laundering case, and then taken into custody under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) ordinance for 30 days.

Upon the completion of the MPO detention, the Lahore NAB team arrested Parvez Elahi from Adiala Jail, accusing him of allegedly receiving bribes or kickbacks. Elahi’s lawyer, Amir Saeed Rawn, has described the arrest as politically motivated and has stated that they plan to challenge it in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

In the Rawalpindi sessions court, NAB prosecutors requested a two-day transitory remand to transfer Parvez Elahi to Lahore. However, the court granted only a one-day transitory remand and instructed the Investigation Officer to ensure Elahi’s safe custody before presenting him in the relevant court.

The case against Parvez Elahi involves allegations of receiving bribes or kickbacks in exchange for awarding contracts for road schemes in the Gujrat Highways Division to selected contractors. Other co-accused individuals include his son, Moonis Elahi, Mahr Azmat Hayat, and others. It is alleged that Parvez and Moonis received kickbacks directly from Azmat as well as through their accountant, Imtiaz Ali Shah, causing losses to the government exchequer and committing corruption offenses under Section 9(a) of the NAB ordinance, 1999.

This arrest follows a series of previous arrests and releases of Parvez Elahi, making it a complex legal situation.
