The report suggests that life expectancy for Lahoris is decreasing by 7 years per year. It also warns that current pollution levels have severe health impacts, especially for children, equating exposure to inhaling 30 cigarettes daily.
Notably, Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) has exceeded 500, far above the normal level of 200. The Environment Department warns that AQI levels between 200-300 can irritate the eyes, while levels above 400-500 are extremely hazardous. Authorities have been urged to take strict action to reduce air pollution.
In efforts to combat smog, the Lahore High Court recently halted the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOC) for new development projects until January.
Additionally, local authorities have cracked down on smoke-emitting vehicles, with Lahore traffic police impounding 40,519 vehicles over the past two weeks.
