IT Minister Seeks To Route China's Internet Traffic Through Pakistan

Caretaker IT Minister Dr. Umar Saif has unveiled a plan to reroute China’s internet traffic through Pakistan, establishing a more direct and efficient route to Europe. He discussed the proposed project with representatives from relevant institutions, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Special Communication Organization (SCO), and various telecom operators.

The project’s primary objective is to create an alternative corridor for China to connect to Europe through Pakistan, offering significant economic benefits to the country. It involves integrating the existing optical fiber cable network from Khunjerab to Karachi with a submarine cable for China’s traffic, optimizing internet traffic flow and enhancing connectivity.

Dr. Saif emphasized the potential for multi-million-dollar opportunities for Pakistan through this project. He also highlighted the Special Investment Facilitation Council Forum’s pivotal role in driving innovative initiatives in the IT and telecom sector.

The minister focused on expanding Pakistan’s optical fiber cable network, which currently spans around 180,000 kilometers and includes 6,000 mobile towers. His vision includes extending the network to 300,000 kilometers and setting up 20,000 towers, significantly improving connectivity and the overall telecom infrastructure.
