Is Pakistan Gov't Mulling To Extend Chief Justice's Term?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]Islamabad – Speculation arises over extending Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure for three more years beyond October 2023, with reports suggesting the incumbent government’s intentions. The Sharif-led administration purportedly aims to prolong the term of Pakistan’s top judge until October 25, 2024, pending amendments to the Constitution.

Media sources indicate that the federal government plans to introduce constitutional amendments for this purpose. A committee member has reportedly initiated work on the proposed amendment, with a final decision expected post-Senate polls.

Under the Constitution, the President appoints the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) and other Supreme Court judges as per Article 175A. Additionally, Article 179 specifies that a Supreme Court judge’s tenure lasts until they reach the age of 65, barring resignation or removal as per constitutional provisions.

In the event of Justice Isa’s retirement, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, the next senior judge, is likely to succeed him as the Chief Justice.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
