Babar Azam Meets PCB Chief To Discuss Role

Babar Azam, the renowned batsman of Pakistan and former captain of the national cricket team, held a meeting on Thursday with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who doubles as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The meeting occurred shortly after the PCB Selection Committee put forward Babar Azam’s name for consideration as the next captain of the national team. Discussions during the meeting between Babar Azam and Mohsin Naqvi reportedly revolved around preparations for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup and cricket series leading up to the tournament.

Sources indicate that Naqvi had tasked the Selection Committee with presenting proposals for the appointment of a new captain for the Pakistan cricket team, and the committee has now submitted its suggestions to the PCB chairman. It’s reported that among the names proposed by the committee for captaincy, Babar’s name stands out.

This development follows less than five months after Babar Azam was relieved of his captaincy duties in all three formats, with Shaheen Shah Afridi taking over as captain of the T20 team and Shan Masood becoming captain of the Test team.

On November 15, 2023, the PCB announced Shan’s appointment as captain until the conclusion of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25. Shan’s tenure began with a challenging three-match Test series against Australia in Australia, which Australia won convincingly.

Additionally, the PCB had announced at that time that Shaheen Shah Afridi would lead the Pakistan Men’s Team in T20Is, with his inaugural assignment being a five-match series in New Zealand from January 12 to 21.
