HBO Announces Key Roles for Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod in Upcoming Harry Potter TV Series

HBO has revealed that its forthcoming Harry Potter television series will feature Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, veterans from the acclaimed series Succession, in key roles. Gardiner will serve as the writer and showrunner, while Mylod will direct several episodes.

Both Gardiner and Mylod contributed significantly to Succession, the Emmy-winning show about a media empire run by a dysfunctional family. Gardiner was part of the producing team, and Mylod was both a director and producer. Gardiner is also noted for her work on His Dark Materials, another HBO fantasy series, while Mylod has directed episodes of Game of Thrones and the upcoming second season of The Last of Us.

Describing the new Harry Potter series, HBO stated it will be “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling.” Rowling expressed her excitement on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I’m truly thrilled to announce our director and writer, both of whom I interviewed as part of the production team. Both have a genuine passion for Harry Potter, and having read Francesca’s pilot script and heard Mark’s vision, I’m certain the TV show will more than live up to expectations.”

HBO emphasized that “each season will bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world, while the original, classic and cherished films will remain at the core of the franchise and available to watch globally.”

Warner Bros Discovery announced the new series last year as part of its strategy for the Max streaming service, which merges HBO Max with Discovery’s unscripted content. The original Harry Potter books have sold over 600 million copies worldwide and were adapted into blockbuster films starring Daniel Radcliffe, grossing $7.7 billion globally from 2001 to 2011.
