Claims circulating on social media about a complete ban on vapes in Punjab have caused confusion among consumers and business owners. Several posts have alleged that vaping products, including vape pods, are now illegal across the province and that violations could lead to heavy fines, legal cases, and even imprisonment.
However, available legal records and court proceedings do not support these claims. According to current laws, no province-wide ban on vapes has been formally enacted in Punjab. The viral posts suggesting strict criminal penalties and blanket restrictions appear to be misleading.
At present, the Punjab government has focused on regulatory actions and public health awareness measures rather than introducing a law that completely prohibits vapes. Retailers can still operate under existing regulations, including age restrictions and rules related to public smoking.
The confusion stems from a crackdown launched by the Punjab government in June last year. Authorities took action against vaping and e-cigarette products due to concerns about increasing use among young people. During the operation, several vape shops were reportedly sealed, while restrictions were placed on advertising, sales, and distribution activities.
Despite those enforcement measures, no legislation has been passed at either the provincial or federal level that explicitly bans the sale, purchase, possession, or use of vapes. Legal experts have pointed out that the actions were taken without a clear legal framework specifically governing vaping products.
More than 70 vape shop owners challenged the crackdown in the Lahore High Court. The court later provided interim relief by ordering authorities to reopen sealed businesses and suspend enforcement actions until proper legislation is introduced.
The court also observed that no existing law in Pakistan currently criminalizes vapes. It further noted that vaping products continue to be imported under federal taxation and regulatory systems.
Officials have confirmed that draft laws regarding vapes are being considered. Until such legislation is approved, no legally enforceable province-wide ban on vapes exists in Punjab, and claims suggesting otherwise remain inaccurate.
