The federal government has said PTI founder Imran Khan will continue receiving medical treatment in accordance with the law and jail manual, as authorities prepare to file a review petition over the Supreme Court’s decision regarding his treatment at a private hospital.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, speaking in Islamabad alongside Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, said health-related matters should remain separate from political disputes.
Tarar said the government had never sought to politicise the health of its political opponents and maintained that Imran Khan, like every prisoner, is legally entitled to appropriate medical facilities.
Imran Khan Entitled to Medical Facilities
Tarar said the PTI founder had previously been provided with medical treatment and would continue to receive healthcare facilities under the applicable rules.
According to the minister, there is no ambiguity regarding the medical treatment being provided to Khan.
He said authorities are fulfilling their responsibility under the jail manual and that Khan will continue to receive the necessary healthcare.
Tarar also stressed that health issues should not be turned into political matters, saying medical concerns must be handled separately from political disagreements.
Govt to File Review Petition
The information minister confirmed that the government will file a review petition against the Supreme Court’s decision, particularly concerning the issue of treatment at a private hospital.
He said the matter is legal in nature and the government will pursue it through the appropriate legal process.
Tarar maintained that the government’s position has remained consistent and that political differences should not affect decisions concerning an individual’s health.
He also referred to previous political statements involving the health of PML-N leaders and accused PTI figures of having politicised medical issues in the past.
Talal Chaudhry Criticises PTI Response
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry also criticised the PTI’s reaction to the court decision.
He said threats, road blockades and political pressure would not determine whether meetings with Imran Khan could take place.
Chaudhry maintained that the government’s position was based on the jail manual and applicable legal procedures.
He also criticised PTI leaders for questioning the judiciary while referring to constitutional amendments and previous judicial proceedings.
PML-N Accuses PTI of Politicising Health Issues
Chaudhry alleged that PTI leaders had previously discussed the medical conditions of PML-N leadership and publicly raised questions about their health.
He recalled incidents involving former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Begum Kulsoom Nawaz, arguing that the PML-N leadership had not treated illness as a political weakness.
Chaudhry also referred to disagreements surrounding medical reports and doctors involved in the treatment of political leaders.
He said health conditions should not be used as political tools and maintained that the PML-N had not adopted such a strategy toward its opponents.
Govt Rejects NRO Claims
Chaudhry also rejected suggestions that the Supreme Court’s decision could be linked to any form of National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
He referred to several previous political developments involving PTI, including resignations, the dissolution of provincial assemblies and the May 9 and November 26 incidents.
The minister argued that the court’s decision should be viewed through its legal context rather than being linked to political concessions.
The government has therefore maintained that Imran Khan will continue to receive medical facilities according to the law, while its review petition concerning treatment at a private hospital will be pursued through the legal process.
