Hossam Hassan has called on the global football community to show greater support for Palestinian civilians, using an official FIFA press conference ahead of Egypt’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against Argentina to deliver a humanitarian message.
Speaking to reporters, Hassan said concern for the Palestinian people transcends religion, nationality, and politics.
“If a person anywhere in the world does not feel for the Palestinian people, then they have lost part of their humanity,” he said.
The Egypt coach was responding to a question about waving the Palestinian flag after Egypt’s victory over Australia in the Round of 32 and whether he would repeat the gesture if Egypt defeats Argentina in Tuesday’s knockout clash.
Hassan described his previous gesture as a natural human reaction and appealed to athletes and journalists worldwide to use their platforms to raise awareness about the suffering of Palestinian civilians.
He emphasized that discussions about human rights and justice should also include the humanitarian situation facing Palestinians.
The comments come amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza Strip, where the humanitarian situation has drawn international attention following extensive destruction, displacement, and civilian casualties.
While FIFA regulations prohibit political slogans on equipment and match-related items, the available rules do not specifically address whether coaches can express political or humanitarian views during official press conferences.
Turning to football matters, Hassan acknowledged the challenge awaiting his side against defending world champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi.
He said Egypt respects Argentina’s quality and achievements but remains confident heading into the match.
“We know we are playing against the World Cup holders and one of the greatest players ever, but we do not fear them,” Hassan said.
The coach added that his team carries the hopes of Egypt, the Arab world, and Africa, and that sense of responsibility motivates the players to focus on delivering their best performance on the field.
Egypt will face Argentina in a highly anticipated World Cup Round of 16 encounter, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
