Canada Tightens Rules for Digital Nomad Visa Program

Canada has tightened its requirements for digital nomads, introducing new documentation rules for remote workers who wish to stay in the country under a common visitor-based work exemption. The move represents a notable change from earlier guidelines, which required very little additional evidence from applicants.

According to updated instructions issued by Canadian immigration authorities on May 26, 2026, immigration officers will now carry out closer checks on individuals entering Canada as digital nomads. The revised guidance is aimed at ensuring that visitors earning income remotely are not participating in the Canadian labour market.

Under the previous rules, digital nomads were generally not required to submit extra documentation beyond the standard visitor requirements. However, the new policy requires applicants to provide sufficient proof that all of their income is generated outside Canada.

Remote workers must now demonstrate that they are either employed by a foreign company or are self-employed with clients located entirely outside Canada. Authorities want clear evidence that there are no financial ties between the worker’s employment activities and the Canadian economy.

Canadian immigration regulations define digital nomads as individuals who work remotely while staying temporarily in the country. They may enter Canada as visitors and continue working online for foreign employers or overseas clients for up to six months without obtaining a work permit.

The updated guidance also provides additional clarification for visitors planning longer stays. Those wishing to remain beyond their authorized period must apply for a visitor record. Applicants must also convince immigration officers that they have no intention of seeking employment in Canada during their stay.

Family members accompanying digital nomads must apply separately for their own temporary resident status rather than being automatically included under one application.

In addition to the new requirements, all standard visitor rules remain in effect. Applicants must show they can financially support themselves, satisfy authorities that they will leave Canada when their stay ends, and meet admissibility requirements related to health and criminal records.
