The Embassy of Afghanistan in India announced the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission in New Delhi on Friday, citing persistent challenges from the Indian government. In a press statement, the embassy expressed profound sadness and regret over the decision, emphasizing that it was made after careful consideration of the historic ties and long-standing partnership between Afghanistan and India.
Several factors were identified as primary reasons for the closure, including the lack of support from the host government, a failure to meet expectations in serving Afghanistan’s interests, and a reduction in personnel and resources. The embassy highlighted the notable absence of crucial support from the host government, hindering their ability to carry out duties effectively. Acknowledging shortcomings, it cited the lack of diplomatic support in India and the absence of a legitimate functioning government in Kabul as contributing factors.

The reduction in personnel and resources, coupled with challenges in visa renewal and other critical areas of cooperation, led to frustration among the embassy team, impeding routine duties. The decision to close all operations, except for emergency consular services to Afghan citizens, was made until the transfer of custodial authority to the host country.
The embassy dismissed baseless claims of internal strife or discord among diplomatic staff, clarifying that such rumors are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of their mission. They affirmed their commitment as a united team working toward the best interests of Afghanistan.
