Punjab Makes Motorcycle Safety Wire Mandatory During Basant

The Punjab government has made the installation of motorcycle safety wire mandatory during the Basant season to prevent fatal kite-string accidents.

The decision was taken amid rising concerns over injuries and deaths caused by metallic and chemical-coated strings, commonly known as dor.

Officials said the safety wire, fitted in front of motorcycles, helps protect riders’ necks from sharp strings hanging across roads.

The provincial administration has directed traffic police and transport authorities to ensure strict implementation throughout Basant-related festivities across Punjab. According to officials, motorcycles without safety wires will face fines, and repeated violations could lead to vehicle seizure during the enforcement period.

The move is part of broader safety measures, including crackdowns on banned kite strings, sellers, and illegal manufacturing units across the province.

Authorities said public awareness campaigns will also be launched to educate citizens about the dangers of hazardous kite flying practices.

Medical experts have repeatedly warned that sharp strings can cause deep cuts, severe bleeding, and even instant death in extreme cases. The government believes mandatory safety wires will significantly reduce risks, especially for motorcyclists, pedestrians, and children during Basant.

Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to coordinate with local administrations to ensure smooth enforcement without public inconvenience.

Officials emphasized that Basant celebrations should not come at the cost of human lives, urging citizens to follow safety guidelines.

The Punjab government said further measures could be introduced if violations continue despite strict monitoring and penalties.
