17-Year Sentence for Imran Khan, Wife in Toshakhana 2 Verdict

A special court in Adiala Jail on Saturday sentenced Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years in prison each in the Toshakhana 2 Case.

The hearing was overseen by Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand. Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were also fined Rs16.4 million each, along with a separate fine of Rs500 each.

Bushra Bibi received a 10-year sentence under Section 409 and an additional 7 years under Sections 5, 2, and 47. Imran Khan received identical sentences. The total prison term for both amounts to 17 years each.

The Toshakhana 2 Case relates to gifts received from Saudi Arabia during Khan’s premiership from 2018 to 2022. According to the 2018 Toshakhana rules, these gifts should have been submitted to the relevant government departments.

Prosecutors argued that the couple failed to register the gifts properly and instead used letters from deputy multi-secretaries to keep them illegally. The total value of the gifts was around €38 million, equivalent to approximately Rs71.5 million. Authorities said undervaluation of the gifts caused a loss of Rs35.28 million to the national exchequer.

Among the gifts was a jewellery set given to Bushra Bibi during a May 2021 visit to Saudi Arabia. The set included a ring, bracelet, necklace, and earrings.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the case in August 2022 after a 37-day investigation. The couple was formally indicted in December 2024. Their pleas for acquittal were rejected by the special Islamabad court.

This case is separate from the first Toshakhana case, in which the couple was sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined Rs1.57 billion collectively. That sentence was later suspended by the Islamabad High Court in April 2024.
