LHC Directs Action Against Police Vehicles Causing Smoke

The Lahore High Court on Friday instructed the Environment Protection Department to take strict action against police vehicles releasing excessive smoke. Justice Shahid Karim issued these directions while hearing petitions related to smog and environmental issues.

He ordered a thorough inspection of all police vehicles, along with those used by other government departments and educational institutions.

During the hearing, Justice Karim also told the Parks and Horticulture Authority to create a committee and submit a detailed report on recent tree-cutting activities. He demanded the PHA provide its policy on tree relocation and questioned how 123 trees were moved without the authority’s awareness.

The judge noted that the city is not the property of any individual minister and emphasized that the Lahore Development Authority must make its projects public and keep citizens fully informed. He urged the LDA to meet with people protesting against tree removal and address their concerns, saying that a lack of transparency leads to unnecessary issues.

Justice Karim further advised authorities to consider declaring Sundays free of commercial activity. The court will continue hearing the case on December 12.
