No Progress Seen in Pakistan-Taliban Turkiye Talks

ISTANBUL – Amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan that have claimed civilian and military lives, leaders from both nations met in Istanbul to devise a counterterrorism strategy.

The third day of talks ended without progress as the Taliban resisted key counterterrorism proposals, offering arguments viewed as unrealistic and raising doubts about their commitment to peace. Pakistan stood firm on its stance, while Taliban negotiators frequently sought Kabul’s approval before responding, indicating limited independence.

Some Taliban delegates privately admitted Pakistan’s concerns were justified but said they lacked authority to act. The dialogue followed deadly border clashes that killed over two dozen Pakistani soldiers and hundreds of militants, prompting Pakistan to launch precision strikes in Kandahar and nearby areas.

Islamabad reiterated its demand that the Taliban cut ties with the TTP, emphasizing that any shelter for anti-Pakistan militants is intolerable. Following the skirmishes, Pakistan temporarily shut border crossings for civilian safety and expressed concern that the Taliban might be advancing India’s interests in the region.
