Louvre Heist: Suspects Apprehended Near Paris

French authorities have arrested suspects involved in the daring daylight heist of France’s crown jewels stolen from the Louvre. One suspect was caught at Charles de Gaulle Airport as he prepared to fly to Algeria, the Paris prosecutor confirmed Sunday.

According to Le Parisien, two men in their 30s from the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb of Paris were detained Saturday evening. Both were already known to police. However, prosecutor Laure Beccuau did not disclose further details, only expressing frustration that news of the arrests was leaked, warning it could hinder the work of the roughly 100 investigators pursuing the case and missing jewels.

The high-profile theft occurred on October 19, when thieves used a crane to break into an upper window of the Louvre during visiting hours. They stole eight priceless pieces valued at $102 million and fled on motorbikes.

The audacious robbery, which exposed serious security flaws, has been described as a “national humiliation” in France, sparking global headlines and a renewed debate about the protection of the country’s cultural treasures.
