CDA Provides Progress Update On Rs. 1.3 Billion Shaheen Chowk Underpass

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has awarded the construction contract for the long-awaited Shaheen Chowk underpass in Islamabad. The major infrastructure project, worth Rs. 1.3 billion, is designed to ease traffic congestion in one of the capital’s busiest areas.

According to CDA officials, the underpass will be built at the intersection of Khyaban-i-Iqbal — commonly known as Margalla Road — and 9th Avenue. Under the new design, vehicles traveling on Khyaban-i-Iqbal will pass through the underpass, while traffic on 9th Avenue will move along the upper level.

The CDA stated that the project aims to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and enhance road safety in the area. Shaheen Chowk frequently experiences heavy traffic, particularly during peak hours, due to its proximity to several government offices, schools, and universities.

Officials added that the project is part of the authority’s broader plan to modernize Islamabad’s road network. The new underpass is expected to provide long-term relief to daily commuters and support smoother connectivity between key city sectors.

Meanwhile, the CDA also provided an update on another major development project — the T-Chowk Flyover. Construction work on the Rs. 1.4 billion flyover has reached 46 percent completion. Located at the junction of GT Road and the Islamabad Expressway, the 1.1-kilometre-long structure will help decongest traffic for vehicles entering the capital from Lahore and Punjab.

CDA officials said that the T-Chowk Flyover’s formal inauguration is expected soon. Both projects reflect the authority’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and ensuring safer, more efficient travel across Islamabad.

Once completed, these initiatives will significantly enhance mobility within the city, reduce traffic jams, and contribute to the capital’s urban development goals.
