Venezuela has formally asked the United Nations Security Council to declare recent US military strikes near its coast as illegal. The government claims that the attacks violated Venezuela’s sovereignty and resulted in the deaths of several civilians.

According to official reports, Venezuela’s ambassador to the UN, Samuel Moncada, submitted a letter to the Council demanding that the strikes be investigated. He urged the body to reaffirm the country’s territorial integrity and condemn the US for what he described as “unlawful use of force.”

Venezuela’s Claim

The Venezuelan government stated that at least 27 people were killed in the strikes, which it says targeted civilian vessels in international waters. Officials argued that the United States had no justification for the operation and provided no evidence to support claims that the vessels were involved in illegal activities.

Moncada emphasized that the actions breached international law and the UN Charter, warning that such incidents could destabilize peace in the region. He called for an emergency session of the Security Council to review the matter and issue a formal statement.

US Response

Washington has defended its actions, claiming the strikes were carried out under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which allows self-defence. The US said the operations targeted suspected drug trafficking networks operating in the Caribbean.

However, Venezuelan officials rejected that explanation, insisting the attacks were unprovoked and unjustified. They also accused the US of interfering in regional affairs under the pretext of anti-narcotics operations.

Ongoing Tensions

The issue has further strained already tense relations between Caracas and Washington. Analysts believe that even if Venezuela’s request reaches the UN Security Council, the US could block any resolution due to its veto power.

Observers say the case highlights growing concerns over the legality of unilateral military actions in international waters. For now, investigations continue, and the Council has yet to issue an official statement.
