The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a flood alert for the Sutlej River and its connected streams. The alert warns of a possible low-level flood at Ganda Singh Wala.
According to PDMA, India may release water into the Sutlej River within the next 72 hours. This, combined with water released from upstream reservoirs, could raise the river’s water level.
PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia said water levels in Indian dams have increased significantly over the past week. Bhakra Dam is currently 61% full, Pong Dam is at 76%, and Thein Dam has reached 64% capacity.
Due to the rising risk, commissioners of Lahore, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Multan, and Dera Ghazi Khan have been alerted. Deputy commissioners in Kasur, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Vehari, Lodhran, Bahawalpur, Multan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, and Rahim Yar Khan have also been instructed to prepare for possible flooding.
The PDMA, along with IRSA and the irrigation department, is monitoring the Sutlej River situation around the clock. Local government, agriculture, health, forestry, livestock, and transport departments have all been placed on alert.
Emergency control rooms have been ordered to remain staffed 24/7. Rescue 1122 disaster response teams are also on high alert and ready to respond quickly.
Citizens have been advised to stay away from rivers, canals, and ponds. People should follow safety guidelines and cooperate with authorities in case of evacuation.
The PDMA has urged the public to report any emergencies by calling the helpline at 1129. The situation will continue to be closely monitored in the coming days.
