Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained in Delhi on Monday during a protest led by the INDIA bloc. The protest was held near the Election Commission’s office. It was aimed at raising concerns over the commission’s neutrality ahead of the upcoming elections.
Over 200 opposition leaders and MPs joined the protest march. They wanted to submit a formal complaint to the Election Commission. However, Delhi Police said only 30 MPs were allowed to visit the office.
Police stopped the protestors from crossing barricades. Some leaders, including Rahul and Priyanka, were detained. Officers said they acted to prevent law and order problems. Deputy Commissioner of Police Devesh Kumar Mahla confirmed that several MPs tried to jump barricades and were taken into custody.
Rahul Gandhi spoke to reporters while being escorted to a police bus. He said the protest was not political but a fight to protect the Constitution. He added that every citizen deserves a clean and fair voter list.
Priyanka Gandhi also criticized the government. She said it was afraid of criticism and called the crackdown an act of fear. “This government is cowardly,” she said while being detained.
Footage from the site showed leaders carrying placards and shouting slogans. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav was seen climbing barricades before being detained by police.
All detained leaders were taken to a nearby police station. The opposition has announced it will continue its campaign. It demands greater electoral transparency and fair conduct by the Election Commission.
This protest comes at a crucial time, as political tensions rise before national elections. Opposition leaders say they will not back down from raising questions about democratic fairness.
