At least 67 Palestinians were killed in northern Gaza while waiting for aid trucks, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry. The incident occurred near the Zikim crossing, where a United Nations convoy had just entered from Israel.
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) confirmed that its 25-truck aid convoy was met by large crowds of desperate civilians. The WFP reported that those civilians came under fire shortly after the convoy cleared Israeli checkpoints.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), however, offered a different version of events. The IDF said it had fired warning shots to deter what it described as an “immediate threat.” It also questioned the death toll reported by local officials.
This latest incident comes as Gaza faces an escalating humanitarian crisis. Medical staff in Gaza say hunger is worsening across the territory, with more people arriving at hospitals in a state of fatigue and extreme weakness.
Over the weekend, the Hamas-run ministry again sounded the alarm, stating that many civilians were collapsing due to lack of food. It also warned that conditions will continue to deteriorate if more aid is not allowed through safely.
The Gaza Strip has been under near-total blockade for months. Most border crossings remain restricted due to ongoing conflict, making it difficult for aid agencies to deliver supplies to areas that need them most.
Despite international pressure, only limited aid is reaching northern Gaza, where many displaced families are now living without enough food, clean water, or medical support.
The incident has sparked fresh outrage and renewed calls for a ceasefire to allow humanitarian access. Global agencies, including the United Nations, have expressed deep concern over the situation.
The WFP reiterated its commitment to continue food deliveries, but said aid efforts must be protected from violence to avoid further tragedies.
