Construction Begins on Main Structure of Mohmand Dam Project

MOHMAND – The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has achieved a significant milestone in the Mohmand Dam Project, with construction officially commencing on the main dam, WAPDA announced on Friday.

This advancement follows the successful completion of key preliminary works, including river diversion, coffer dams upstream and downstream, the dam plinth, and excavation of left and right abutments and foundations. The Mohmand Dam is projected to be completed by 2027-28.

To mark this major development, Federal Minister for Water Resources, Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, visited the site, accompanied by WAPDA Chairman Engr Lt Gen (Retd.) Sajjad Ghani, the General Manager/Project Director of Mohmand Dam, as well as project consultants and contractors.

The minister toured multiple critical components of the project, including the Diversion System, Power Intake Tunnel, Main Dam, Spillway, and Power House. He was briefed on ongoing activities across 14 construction sites and expressed satisfaction over the progress.

“The federal government is fully aware of the country’s growing need for water and affordable energy,” the minister stated. “That is why we are making all-out efforts to complete under-construction mega projects like Mohmand Dam.”

He assured full support from the Ministry of Water Resources to ensure the timely completion of the dam.

Located on the River Swat in the Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the 213-meter-high Mohmand Dam will be the 5th tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam (CFRD) in the world. It has a gross storage capacity of 1.29 million acre-feet (MAF), allowing irrigation for 18,233 acres of new farmland and enhancing supply for an additional 160,000 acres of existing land.

With a planned generation capacity of 800 megawatts, the dam is expected to produce 2.86 billion units of affordable hydel electricity annually. Furthermore, it will provide 300 million gallons per day (MGD) of drinking water to Peshawar, and offer crucial flood protection to Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera.
