Skardu International Airport has started a major expansion and renovation project worth Rs900 Million to improve passenger facilities and support the growing tourism sector in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The project has been launched by the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA). Officials said the upgrade will improve airport infrastructure and help manage the increasing number of passengers traveling to the region.
The Rs900 Million project includes the expansion of the terminal building, improvement of passenger areas, additional check-in counters, increased parking space, and new cargo facilities.
According to the PAA, the terminal building will be expanded significantly. The current area of 21,000 square feet will be increased to 39,000 square feet after completion.
Passenger facilities will also receive major improvements. The departure lounge capacity will increase from 300 passengers to 900 passengers. The arrival lounge will also be expanded from 80 passengers to 200 passengers.
The number of check-in counters will be increased as part of the development plan. The counters will rise from six to 10, helping passengers experience smoother processing during busy travel periods.
The airport’s parking capacity will also be improved. The available parking space will increase from 200 vehicles to 600 vehicles, providing better facilities for travelers and visitors.
The project also includes the construction of a modern cargo office block. The new facility is expected to improve cargo handling operations and support commercial activities in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The PAA said the Rs900 Million investment will help prepare Skardu International Airport for future growth. The upgraded facilities are expected to support more domestic and international flights.
Officials believe the development will make Skardu more accessible for tourists. It will also strengthen the tourism sector of Gilgit-Baltistan, which attracts visitors because of its natural landscapes and mountain destinations.
PAA spokesperson Saifullah Khan said construction work is currently in the early stages. He added that initial activities, including line marking, have already started before major construction work begins.
The airport upgrade is part of broader efforts to improve aviation infrastructure in Pakistan. Authorities aim to provide better passenger services and enhance connectivity with important tourist destinations.
