May 28 Declared a Public Holiday

The Sindh government has officially declared Wednesday, May 28, as a public holiday to commemorate Youm-e-Takbeer, marking Pakistan’s historic nuclear tests in 1998.

According to a notification issued on Monday by the chief secretary, all government offices—including provincial departments, autonomous bodies, and local municipal councils across Sindh—will remain closed on the occasion.

In line with the government’s decision, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) announced it will suspend trading activities on May 28 in observance of the national day.

In an official notice issued Monday, the PSX informed all stakeholders that the closure aligns with the public holiday declared by the Government of Pakistan.

“All concerned are hereby informed that Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited will remain closed on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, being a public holiday declared by the Government of Pakistan on the occasion of Youm-e-Takbeer,” the notice read.

It is recalled that Pakistan responded to India’s nuclear explosions on May 28, 1998, with its own tests in Chagai, Balochistan. This historic event marked Pakistan as the first nuclear power in the Muslim world and the seventh globally. The day is remembered nationwide as Youm-e-Takbeer.
