Pakistan has decided to formally issue a diplomatic notice to India in response to its unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. This decision comes amid escalating tensions between the two countries following recent developments in Indian-administered Kashmir. The move aims to challenge India’s actions, which Pakistan views as a violation of international agreements.

Urgent legal and constitutional consultations are underway, with initial groundwork already completed by Pakistan’s ministries of Foreign Affairs, Water Resources, and Law. The formal notice, expected soon, will seek a detailed explanation from India over its decision to halt treaty obligations without mutual consent. Pakistan is also weighing its options to raise the issue at global forums to garner international support.

Officials from Pakistan’s Indus Commission maintain that the country holds a legal upper hand under the treaty’s framework. They believe India could be pressured into reversing its decision if international and legal pressure mounts. All future steps, however, will be executed with full government and cabinet approval to ensure institutional backing.

India’s decision followed the Pahalgam attack in occupied Kashmir, where 26 tourists were killed by unidentified gunmen. Blaming Pakistan, India announced aggressive measures including the treaty suspension. Islamabad has firmly denied involvement, calling for an impartial investigation. In retaliation, Pakistan’s National Security Committee closed the Wagah border and shut its airspace to Indian aircraft as part of broader reciprocal actions.
