The Govt has approved an international tender for exporting 108,000 metric tons of sugar. The sugar is currently held by the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the meeting at the Finance Division in Islamabad.
The approved export quantity is part of a larger sugar stock. The government imported 300,000 metric tons of sugar during the previous year.
The imports were made following recommendations from the Steering Committee on Sugar. The committee was formed after receiving approval from the federal cabinet.
The Ministry of National Food Security and Research requested permission for the new tender. It sought approval to invite international bidders for the remaining sugar stock.
The Govt has now allowed the ministry to proceed with the international bidding process. The tender will cover the full remaining quantity of 108,000 metric tons.
The sugar is currently stored under the management of TCP. The corporation is responsible for handling the government-held stock.
The international tender will follow the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) Rules 2004. This requirement is intended to ensure that the bidding process follows established procurement procedures.
International buyers will therefore be able to participate in the tender. Further details about the bidding process will be provided through the relevant procurement mechanism.
The decision comes after the government previously imported sugar to address supply concerns. The imported stock was intended to support availability in the domestic market.
With a portion of the stock remaining, authorities have now decided to export it. The move will allow the government to manage the remaining imported inventory.
The Govt decision was made during a meeting attended by several senior officials. Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain participated in the meeting.
Federal Minister for Investment Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh also attended the session. Advisor to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan was present as well.
Federal secretaries and senior officials from relevant ministries also joined the meeting. They discussed matters related to the sugar export proposal and other economic issues.
The international tender is expected to provide a formal mechanism for selling the remaining sugar stock. The process will be conducted according to applicable procurement rules.
The approved export quantity represents a significant portion of the sugar previously imported by the government. Authorities will now move forward with the required tendering process.
The Govt’s decision reflects its approach to managing government-held sugar inventories. It also provides an opportunity to dispose of the remaining stock through international markets.
The Ministry of National Food Security and Research will oversee the next steps. The tender process will determine how the 108,000 metric tons are sold to international buyers.
