The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has launched the licensing of Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers under a new class license framework, aiming to regulate data services across the country. According to a PTA spokesperson, two companies have already received approval for class licenses for VPN services, marking the start of the initiative.
The PTA’s move is designed to facilitate businesses in using VPNs legally while ensuring data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance. “PTA is committed to supporting organisations with responsible connectivity solutions,” the spokesperson noted. Businesses and individuals interested in obtaining a class license for VPN services can apply through PTA’s official e-services portal.

In a notable step for freelancers, PTA introduced a VPN registration facility via mobile numbers in December 2024. This new system allows freelancers without static IPs to register and use VPN services, enabling them to work seamlessly on mobile data. Over 31,000 VPNs have already been registered, addressing challenges freelancers previously faced.
A class license allows multiple users to operate under a unified regulatory framework without needing individual approvals. Companies providing VPN services must now acquire this license to legally operate in Pakistan, a part of PTA’s broader effort to support the IT sector and streamline VPN registration processes.
