In a major step forward for domestic energy exploration, new gas and oil reserves have been discovered in Waziristan. Mari Energies, the operator of the Waziristan block, confirmed the breakthrough at the Spinam-1 well, which began drilling on May 28, 2024. The well is currently producing 12.96 million cubic feet of gas per day, along with 20 barrels of crude oil, marking a notable addition to Pakistan’s hydrocarbon reserves.
Mari Energies holds a 55% stake in the block, with the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Oil and Gas Investment Limited (OPI) as joint venture partners. The company highlighted that this discovery would help fortify Pakistan’s energy supply, contributing significantly to the country’s domestic hydrocarbon resources.

The success of the project was credited in part to the support from national security agencies and both federal and provincial governments, which facilitated the exploration and extraction process.
This announcement comes just a year after Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) made a similar discovery of oil and gas reserves in Sindh’s Sujawal district. The Shah Bandar block’s Jhamp East X-1 well produces 10 million standard cubic feet of natural gas per day and over 150 barrels of light oil, further bolstering the country’s energy sector. The reserves are integrated into the Sui Southern Gas Company’s system, enhancing the regional supply of natural gas.
With the backing of multiple stakeholders in both the Waziristan and Shah Bandar blocks, these discoveries represent a positive shift for Pakistan’s energy landscape and its long-term energy security.
