Punjab Cabinet Simplifies Vehicle Registration with Amendment to Motor Vehicle Ordinance

The Punjab cabinet has approved an amendment to Section 24 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance Act 1965, streamlining the vehicle registration process. Motor vehicle owners in Punjab can now register their vehicles in any district across the province, removing the previous requirement to register in their home district.

An Excise and Taxation Department spokesperson stated that vehicle registration numbers will be issued under a unified series across Punjab. The spokesperson also assured that there are no restrictions on vehicle movement between provinces, guaranteeing mobility for Punjab residents.

New Policy to Curb Tax Evasion and Enhance Security
In a related development, the Punjab government recently implemented a new vehicle registration policy aimed at reducing tax evasion and bolstering security. The policy prohibits Punjab residents from registering vehicles in other provinces or Islamabad, a move welcomed by the Excise and Taxation Department.

Excise officials have long raised concerns about the common practice of residents registering their vehicles in neighboring provinces or the federal capital to avoid local taxes. The new policy is expected to address these issues and ensure compliance with provincial tax regulations.

This amendment marks a significant shift in vehicle registration policies, offering greater convenience while ensuring better tax and security compliance across Punjab.
